Soar

Pasadena City College Library Installation . Pasadena, California . 2012

Material : Lasercut and thermoformed 1/16” and 3/16” Acrylic . Grommeted Elastic Textile . Fastener

Dimension [in Feet]: 8 x 8 x 8

Soar studies the interplay of compressive and tensile forces in two interconnecting materials. The resulting equilibrium creates a self-supporting, gradually expanding and visually dynamic installation. The installation is an adaptable system of acrylic diagrid structure under compression and connecting textile membranes under tension. Throughout its height, the diagrid transforms, contracting at the bottom and gradually expanding toward the top. This force acts on the membranes causing them to stretch. Simultaneously, the tendency of membrane to remain unstretched opposes those forces in the diagrid adjusting its expansion.
